On 9th January 2026, the Singapore Law Review hosted its 37th SLR Annual Lecture - “Bicentennial Anniversary of Singapore’s Legal System: The Rule of Law as our Foundation for Justice, Prosperity and Progress“ marking the Bicentennial Anniversary of Singapore’s modern legal and judicial system established by the Second Charter of Justice in 1826. Our guest speaker, Mr Murali Pillai, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Law and Ministry of Transport, examined Singapore’s distinctive and pragmatic approach to the Rule of Law, tracing its evolution from inherited colonial institutions and highlighting the responsibility of the next generation to strengthen and adapt the legal system to meet future challenges amidst global uncertainty.
